Artificial Cornea

The Boston Keratoprosthesis is an artificial cornea. This patient had two failed Penetrating Keratoplasty surgeries so the doctor implanted the artificial cornea. The patient's cornea was eaten by an Acanthamoeba, which is a single-cell organism (protozoan) found in soil and contaminated water. Can cause a severe corneal infection (keratitis) after improperly sterilized extended-wear contact lenses are worn. The patient's VA is actually 20/70 now, which is remarkable.
